He meets her every night, spinning sweet words mixed with horrifying and steamy encounters.
But is he real or just a figment of her imagination?
“Don’t be late. Promise?” I asked, my chest aching from his touch. He kissed me forehead. “Don’t be early. Promise?”

The Nightmare King Review:
Lucy’s depression makes her feel like there’s nothing to live for. But her nightmares? They’re what dreams are made of.
The Nightmare King visits Lucy while she sleeps. He feels so real. He could only be a figment of her imagination though. Right?
I think Kat did a very good job representing some of the stages of depression. Additionally, I loved the checklists based on the type of day Lucy was having. I may have to borrow that idea!
And when Lucy finally recognized the Nightmare King, my eyes got really misty. It was such a good twist and had me tearing up throughout the remainder of the story.
While I know her intentions were good, I felt Sam was a bit overbearing. I’ve been deep in a depressive episode and felt my husband reminding me to drink water was too much. Adults with mental illnesses are still adults. Knowing the ending of this book, I completely understand why Sam did what she did, but I also know how frustrating it can be to feel babied.
The Nightmare King is perfect for readers who enjoy horror movies, a psychological thriller with a few pinches of spice, and an identity reveal that will shock you.
